He said that earlier in the week, he had parked in front of his house. His dog was in the car. As they typically do, he said, he and his dog raced to the front door. “He was beating me, so I tried to take two steps at a time and messed up my ankle,” Stewart said.

I waited for some sign of irony, some recognition that he was, after all, racing a dog . There was none. It was as if he was describing a last-lap, side-by-side dash to the finish line at Daytona, and he was annoyed that he lost.

Perfect anecdote.
